The $5 gold coin for the Negro Leagues Baseball commemorative coin program features an obverse with a portrait of league founder Rube Foster wearing a cap along with his signature on the lower right side. This side was designed by Laurie Musser and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.
The reverse features the tipping of one’s hat – a gesture of respect in baseball and was designed by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Eric David Custer.
Each $5 gold coin included a $35 surcharge to help fund educational and outreach programs at the National Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
